Special Projects & Programs
In addition to grants made from its core funds, New World's is responsive to timely opportunities to promote political participation and visibility of economic and environmental justice issues through discretionary grantmaking. We have housed and incubated a number of special programs, which have later launched on their own.
Our current special programs include:
Past Special Projects
New World is proud to have helped seed some of the most significant progressive advances of the past fifty years, including:
Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) was founded in 2001 by a small group of young foundation professionals and individual donors who sought to work and learn with peers in order to advance social justice philanthropy. From 2002-2009, EPIP was housed at the New World Foundation.
The Alston-Bannerman Fellowships, which provides sabbaticals for lifelong activists of color, and have recently found a new home with the Center for Social Inclusion (CSI).
The Social Justice Infrastructure Group which convened staff of national foundations on social justice issues, is now a project of Jewish Funds for Justice.
The Right Livelihood Awards in Sweden (the "Alternative Nobel"), which we sponsored in the United States for several years, have also moved on.
Past special projects also include, The Harold Fleming Award for civil rights leadership, which was first awarded to Henry Hampton, the creator of the civil rights documentary series, Eyes on the Prize.
In the 1990s, New World provided a home and development resources for Twenty-First Century Foundation, which works with African-American donors to promote community activism nationwide.
Similarly, we provided a home for the National Religious Partnership for the Environment in its early years, and played an active role in the development of the Grassroots Policy Project, that provides social justice groups with tools and frameworks for more strategic approaches to movement-building.
We welcome as partners, donors and foundations who would like to join us in nurturing the important movements of the future.
