Junior at The University of Oregon

Latin American and Women and Gender Studies (Double Major)

Leudy is originally from Miami, Florida. She is pursuing a double major in Latin American and Women and Gender Studies. Committed to her home community, as well as her studies on campus, Leudy is an integral part of the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Leudy’s work at the Florida Immigrant Coalition has allowed her to shape statewide civic engagement and grassroots campaigns and advocate for the fair treatment of all people.

As a result of her community and campus work, Leudy was recently featured in the local Eugene, Oregon news regarding her leadership and athletic skills. A proud queer woman, she also has appeared in a Spanish language public service announcement for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida to promote LGBTQ rights and how they intersect with civil rights within the Latino community.

The COIN program has allowed Leudy to attend the University of Oregon on a full scholarship, develop deep relationships with other emerging leaders across the US and allow her to see her struggles as motivation to educate others and help them realize that they too can also make a difference in their local communities.

When Leudy reflects about her time as a COIN scholar she states that,

“I have made it to where I am now because COIN has given me the opportunity to get an education, see the importance of my role in my community and instilled in me an entirely new belief in myself that will, I hope, change the world.”

Thinking about the challenges of social justice work, she says,

“Having the opportunity to get involved with the Chicano community in Eugene, Oregon made me value the fact that I can vote and my own privilege. Through alliance building, every human being will obtain equality and justice. No matter where they’re from, no matter what they’re background is—they too also have a voice.”

As Leudy returns to campus in the Fall, she looks forward to continuing her academic success, community work and remaining engaged as a COIN Scholar and mentor to her peers and family.
